Biography
NO SPOILERS BELOWLuka has a soft-spoken, gentle personality and a notably feminine appearance and manner, which the story treats as a genuine part of who Luka is rather than a costume or a joke. Luka is frequently mistaken for a girl by people who don't know them, and is generally more comfortable being perceived that way than being read as male. Luka's father, the shrine's head priest, wanted a son to inherit the shrine and raised Luka with that expectation, which is a source of ongoing tension explored later in the story.
In a later arc, Okabe sends a D-Mail intending to help a lab member, and the resulting shift in the world line changes how Luka's father raised them in childhood — leading to a more physically masculinized Luka in that world line, against Luka's own wishes. The arc is generally read as being about consent, body autonomy, and identity: Luka's distress isn't played for comedy, and Okabe ultimately works to undo the change. Interpretations of exactly how the story frames Luka's identity vary between fans, and the anime, visual novel, and later light-novel spin-offs handle the pacing and emphasis of this arc slightly differently.
